PROGRAM NOTE
Chronophonetic Alphabets, commissioned by Ensemble Chronophonie (Freiburg, Germany) was composed June–September of 2007. The work, lasting approximately six minutes, is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, marimba, and piano. The composition utilizes a Babbittonian all-partition array (in twelve parts with 58 partitions) originally employed in my work Ferocious Alphabets, for clarinet and violin. The array determines (in specificity and/or generality) pitch, register, rhythm, and instrumentation. The range of the entire composition is rather narrow, spanning only about four octaves.
