PROGRAM NOTE
Watch the Weather Change, for saxophone quartet, was composed in 2024 for Charlie Chadwell, John Sampen, and the 2025 Western Illinois University New Music Festival. Over the course of 11 minutes, three strands of steady pulses — each unfolding slowly at slightly different temporal intervals in a ratio of 7:8:9 — interact, overlap, and converge. Unhurried waves of sound articulate an initial trichord (Bb-F-G) that gradually expands to six pitch-classes (Bb-F-G-D-E-A) before thinning again to three (D-E-A) by the work’s conclusion. The title is a lyric from the song “Disposition” on Tool’s 2001 album Lateralus.
