PROGRAM NOTE

A Single Generous Totality is a short piece for solo piano composed for Perspectives of New Music, Volume 56, No. 2, a festschrift celebrating the 80th birthday of American composer Charles Wuorinen. The work's title is derived from this quote from Wuorinen's 1979 book, Simple Composition: "If the highly chromatic music of late tonality can be regarded as proto-12-tone; if the last, 12-tone, works of Stravinsky can contain so many tonal-system puns—then surely our awareness of the two approaches to composition as parts of a single generous totality must become vivid indeed."
